Farmers offers qualifying young
participants up to a 32% discount on their insurance
premiums for participating in the company's youthful
driver education program called Youth Education &
Safety (Y.E.S.).
The Y.E.S. program is a novel effort
to work with parents and young drivers to instill a
stronger sense of responsibility, and is directed at
nearly one million young drivers insured nationwide
by Farmers.
The Y.E.S. program is a partnership
with our customers. We're reaching out to both the
parents and youthful drivers we insure with a
comprehensive educational program which identifies
dangerous driving behaviors and calls for the
establishment of family driving rules.
The Farmers program works by us
sitting down with parents and the new driver when
they are insured. The session begins with a video,
which features graphic accident scenes and
common-sense safety advice.
After watching the video, the young
driver is directed through a workbook which
illustrates various dangerous driving
characteristics. In addition to safety issues, the
workbook also addresses how insurance costs will be
affected if he or she has traffic accidents or
tickets.
There is a clear need to get through
to young people, in the presence of their parents, a
strong message about safety and the consequences of
their actions. The Y.E.S. program addresses the
careless driving habits which put young people at
risk -- perhaps the greatest risk they are likely to
face during their entire lives.
Although teenage drivers account for
only 10 percent of the driving population, they
represent 15 percent of drivers involved in fatal
accidents.
The Y.E.S. program has been welcomed
by a number of traffic safety and consumer
organizations, including the Red Cross, the National
Commission Against Drunk Driving, Students Against
Driving Drunk (SADD), Advocates for Highway and Auto
Safety and the National Safety Council.
